July Flowers

I’d love to ramble on about the latest political happenings–from the Iranian nuclear agreement to the presidential campaigns–yet that seems to have little to do with these flowers.  I took this photo yesterday after leaving my office on East 63rd and Lexington.  How many times I’ve seen New Yorkers of all kinds stop as I often do to reflect on the beauty of this corner garden beneath the porcelain statue of Mary.  I suspect that a good number who stop are not religious and yet Mary’s peaceful presence pervades this ground.  Certainly a good deal of credit goes to the gardener, but Mary–who lost her only son in no small part to the violent political machinations of the vulgar–offers an alternative way of being in the midst of the world’s tumult.  She consoles.
